Read through this review, to find out for yourself the best soccer balls.

BUYER’S GUIDE

Intended Use Of the Ball

Before grabbing the first ball off the shelves, it is important to consider where you intend to use it. There is a specific soccer ball for each terrain and occasion. In this case, you will encounter; indoor, turf, beach and professional soccer balls.

  • Professional Match Soccer Ball

A match ball is meant for a professional soccer match. Every detail right from its weight, size, and shape is geared towards maximising the natural abilities as well as the skills of the players.

Professional match balls are recognized and approved by all international organisations including FIFA and bear an approval logo on them.

Due to their intense use, professional match balls have at least 5 layers and uses high-quality materials. Its shape, bounce, balance, trajectory, velocity and water absorption are strictly controlled to enhance performance.

With such qualities and strict measures, professional match balls are the most expensive soccer balls.

  • Recreational/Training or Practice Balls

Training balls are ideal for training and recreational use. These are the least expensive and more durable compared to professional match balls as they are meant to be continuously used for an extended period. This type of ball is usually constructed with 4 or fewer layers.

The casing is made of PVC which makes it is quality lower compared to a professional match soccer ball. Usually, the panels of a practice ball are moulded together and not stitched together. These types of balls can withstand rough surfaces such as; asphalt and concrete.

  • Promotional Soccer Balls

In your search, you are also likely to encounter promotional balls. These are purposely designed to promote certain products, companies or events. They are usually small in size; size 1 or 2 and not meant to be used for professional matches or even for training.

  • Indoor Soccer Balls

This type of ball is easy to distinguish because its outer material is similar to the material used on tennis balls. They normally are a size 5 and similar to the outdoor soccer ball.

Indoor soccer balls are purposely designed with less rebound to accommodate turf and harder surfaces that cover the walls of an indoor soccer field and playing ground.

  • Futsal Soccer Ball

By no means is this type of ball similar to a typical soccer ball. For starters, instead of air, its bladder is filled with foam.

In this case, the ball has less bounce and is heavier to facilitate its purpose; meant to be used on a hard surface indoors. This size 4 ball may also have suede castings which help to stabilize the ball on a slippery floor.

  • Beach Soccer Ball

These are usually a size 5 and lighter than a typical soccer ball. It is softer to touch hence comfortable for use on bare feet. Beach soccer balls are brightly coloured to make them easy to spot in sandy beaches. They are also water-resistant as they are likely to get kicked into the beach.

Cover

The cover is the outermost part of a ball which is responsible for providing the feel, softness, durability, and usability. The appearance of a ball also depends on how beautiful the cover is.

So, now you realize the variation of the cover depends on the materials mainly, right? The material of the cover of a street soccer ball is not the same as the material of the cover of an official soccer ball.

Eventually, the question that is playing on your mind now is, what are the materials that are used to make the cover of different balls?

Mostly there are three types of materials you will find that are used to make the cover:

  • Synthetic Leather

Synthetic leather is used to make the highest quality balls. You are quite sure by now that these are the most expensive ones among the three types of cover material (i.e. Polyurethane (PU) and PolyVinyl Carbonate(PVC)).

Synthetic leather will give you a great feel, control, and softness but they are less durable and less water-resistant than PVC or PU.

This material is used to make the premium match balls.

  • Polyurethane(PU)

Polyurethane is staying in between Synthetic leather and PVC regarding quality. This material will give you a leather-like feeling, and regarding durability, they are almost as durable as PVC.

A ball made out of PU is used to play competitive matches due to its preferred feel and reliability. The downside is that a PU made balls may scuff and degenerate faster than the PVC made ones.

  • Poly Vinyl Carbonate (PVC)

PVC ensures durability. The balls made of PVC don’t scuff easily like PU or synthetic leather.

While durability is the main benefit of this material, the other side of the coin is they are less flexible than synthetic leather, and Polyurethane, resulting in less control. Very often you will find glossy coating to help increase water-resistant, and additional protection.

PVC made balls are perfect for practising. These are the least expensive ones among these three types of materials.

By now, we hope you have good knowledge about the different materials that are used to make the cover.

Panels

Well, panels are not any different component. Panels are the segments or octagon quilt that are seen outside the balls. Of course, nowadays you will find some other shapes besides octagon. FIFA official balls usually contain 32 panels.

But nowadays you will also find 26, 18, 14, 8 or even 6 panels with different shapes and designs from those of conventional balls.

What does the number of panels determine?

They determine the control and movement through the air. Fewer panels (ranging from 6 to 26 panels) will make the ball faster and curve more through the air because of the less stability. On the other hand, more panels offer control and playability.

There are two ways so far to place the panels on the lining; stitching or glueing.

The highest quality balls are stitched, and that is why they are more durable than glued ones. Stitching can be done by using a machine or manually. Manual stitching means the balls are hand-stitched. Hand-stitched balls are more durable than their machine-stitched counterparts.

Usually, in the case of practice balls, the panels are glued together onto the lining. Glued balls offer a harder feeling than those of stitched balls, and they are less expensive as well.

Lining

The lining is the middle part that is placed in between cover/panels and bladder. Lining plays an important role by giving the ball an incredible shape, structure, and control. More layer of lining with polyester and cotton helps to retain the shape and bounce over time.

The high-quality balls have four layers of polyester and cotton lining to give them strength, and bounce. Mid quality balls usually have two layers of polyester and two levels of the cotton lining. On the other hand, low levels ones usually have two levels of the polyester lining.

Bladder

If you say the cover and lining is the body parts of a ball then I will say the bladder is the heart of it. It is the innermost part and contains air. Bladder gives the ball shape and movement.

There are mostly two types of bladders:

  • Butyl

Butyl bladders are not as responsive as latex bladders, but they can retain air for a longer period than latex bladders. That is why they require less frequent air refills, and they are easier to maintain. This type of bladder is used to make mid-priced or cheaper balls.

  • Latex

Latex bladders are used in high-quality balls. These kind of bladders are soft and provide good feeling. They offer better response and bounce than Butyl bladders, but the downside of this kind of bladder is they don’t hold the air for too long.

As a result, they require filling more frequently. Air escapes due to micropores on the cover, but nowadays some balls are constructed with carbon latex bladder to help to close these micropores. As a result, the balls can hold air for a longer period.

Soccer ball sizes

Choosing the right size according to your age groups is important. Not only based on the age groups but also based on different leagues. The reason is different leagues use different sized balls. So you should buy the perfect size so that your practice makes you perfect for league matches.

So what are the different sizes and what size is right for you? Let’s have a look.

  • Size 5 soccer balls

Size 5 is for adult ageing over 12 years. That means from 13 years of age and above. So definitely size 5 is used in the major tournaments or league plays. These balls have a circumference of 27-28 inches and weigh 14-16 ounces.

  • Size 4 soccer balls

Size 4 is used by the children who are in the learning stage, ranging from 8-12 years of age. These balls have a circumference of 25-26 inches and weigh 12-13 ounces.

  • Size 3 soccer balls

Size 3 soccer balls are for children under the age of 8. The circumference of these balls varies from 23-24 inches, and weight is 11-12 ounces.

  • Size 2 soccer balls

Size 2 balls are played by the children aged below 4 years. These balls are also used for ball control drills. The circumference of size 2 balls varies from 20-22 inches.

  • Size 1 soccer balls

These are called mini or skill balls. Because the clubs use these balls to train their players to improve their skill and ball control.

Now you know that there are total of 5 variations in ball size. Buy the appropriate size as per your requirement. Some buyers who don’t know these differences, make a mistake while buying.

For example, if someone is looking for an official match ball, but they purchase a size 3 ball by mistake or because of lack of knowledge. If you also do this, surely you are not going to be satisfied with the purchase.

Budget

The amount that you are willing to pay for the soccer ball might influence your search. These range in price depending on its type, make, quality and other features.

If you are looking for a ball to kick around for fun or for a child as a toy, you should opt for an inexpensive ball as they are likely to ruin the ball or easily get bored with it shortly after.

This also applies to children who are in a league as they will soon outgrow the ball hence the need for a bigger and more expensive soccer ball.

If you are willing to purchase an expensive ball, it is advisable that you do a little research before purchase. Just because a soccer ball is expensive doesn’t mean that it is the best on the market.
